Why Lake Arrowhead

Published by Jan

WHY THE MOUNTAINS?

The San Bernardino Mountains is an area of cedars and pines, ravines of dogwoods, no stop lights, small towns, post office boxes and seasons. In fall, trees turn colors and leaves fall. So does snow in the winter. In the spring there are glorious explosions of color from trees in bloom and fields of daffodils. Mid-summer temperatures are temperate compared to most of Southern California.

The mountains are surprisingly close to Los Angeles, Newport Beach, Palm Springs and San Diego – an hour and a half to two hours with happy traffic. Numbers of people from those areas have second homes up here; for the boating, the skiing (water and snow), the hiking, biking, serenity and pure wonder of being close to nature. Others have bought great homes or even mansions that they could not afford down below.

This is also a commuter community for many people who work in the Inland Empire. We have minimal crime, reduced pollution, good schools, strong community ties and not a shopping mall or stop light in sight.

ARE WE CRAZY TO LIVE HERE?

Amidst trees that could burn? With deer, bear, raccoons, coyotes, blue jays and humming birds? All around you? Threatening?

Truth is everyone, everywhere lives with danger but some of it you can protect against, like forest fires. And believe me, we’ve had them up here. Thanks to the Forest Service, CalFire and the local communities forests are being thinned, weeds abated and building standards improved.

BUT ARE YOU SAFE?

Well, from earthquakes, there’s a 5,000 foot buffer of granite which equals a two point better Richter scale chance of survival. From global warming? When LA’s underwater we’ll be living on an island.

Still, the biggest danger in California is real estate prices. Admit it, few of us can afford San Diego or Brentwood. No one can afford oceanfront any more. You dream of beauty, vistas, privacy and quiet. Can’t afford it down below?

Try the mountains. You can get more for your dollar than you could ever imagine other than in — Oklahoma.

We are begining to look for a mountain retreat. Can you point to any websites or articles that talk about what to look for (or becareful of ) in a mountain house. I am interested in features and construction. For example, what should I look for in a heating system or in plumbing. Thanks.

Very Nice blog with a ton of informative information. Can you recommend any decent forums or social groups to join that cover these types of topics. Also, I really appreciate the fact that you approach these topics from a stand point of knowledge and information instead of the typical “I think” mentality that you see so much on the internet these days.

Awesome info! I was honestly just thinking about something similar to this the other day so, it was almost “weird” when I ran across this. You would be surprised how many people simply have no idea when it comes to this kind of stuff. Anyway, thanks for getting this info out there and I’m sure I’m not the only one who appreciates you taking the time to post this for the masses.
